On September 25th 2006, John and Amanda Neal docked their Hallberg-Rassy 46, Mahina Tiare III in the yard after sailing 107,085 miles. Since launching in January 1997, they have conducted 80 offshore sail-training expeditions, sailing to 35 countries and have had 480 sailors join them from around the world. Their primary teaching focus is introducing sailors to offshore passage making, navigation and storm tactics and the Hallberg-Rassy 46 has proven an excellent yacht. Many of their expedition members have purchased Hallberg-Rassy yachts after sailing aboard Mahina Tiare III. To read the logs and see pictures of past expeditions see www.mahina.com. www.hallberg-rassy.com as been online for ten years now
|
In December 1996 www.hallberg-rassy.com got online. That is now ten years ago, an eternity on the World Wide Web. The HR web page was one of the first for a boatyard in Europe. Already from the beginning the contents was quite extensive. Step by step more and more information has been added. Hallberg-Rassys web page is by many considered to be the most informative in the business. This is for example what Mr Patrick Watson writes: ”I must commend you on the quality of your website! I am an avid sailor, and work with a company that specializes in helping companies create engaging websites through a set of modular customer engagement solutions. I have been looking at purchasing a yacht over the past couple of months and found your site to be extremely informative, well laid out and visually attractive. It is rare to find a sailboat manufacturer that actually is proud of showing a wealth of photos of their designs. I must say that your site is without doubt the highest quality yacht site I have seen to this day". |

Results from the Hallberg-Rassy Fun Cup 2006
|
The overall winner of the 2006 Hallberg-Rassy Fun Cup is Mrs Kolb with her HR 42 F "Ulla". Mrs Kolb sailed together with her husband, but it was Mrs Kolb who was the helmsman. It was not only good sailing that counted. Friday evening there was a blind test of whiskies and on Saturday night a complete winch had to be dismanteled and put together again, on shortest possible time. The results from the whisky test and the winch task counted equally much as the result from the regattas. Congratulations to Mrs Kolb! To see the complete result list, please go here |

(For Norwegian verison, please go here) Hallberg-Rassy’s Norwegian representative, Pollen Maritime AS, invited Hallberg-Rassy sailors for a meeting at Hankø Yacht Club 1-3 September 2006. Saturday afternoon the crews met up and had a meal on the dock and a briefing by Are Pilip Eklund from Elvstrøm-Sobstad. At Saturday evening it was a prize giving cermony, but no account at all was taken to how fast the yachts were sailied, completely other things counted. A new tradition is started! |

Hallberg-Rassy double Boat of the Year 2006 in the USA
![]()
Once again, Hallberg-Rassy boats win a Boat of the Year award. But this time it is not just one Hallberg-Rassy, both the HR 37 and the HR 62 won; the HR 37 the title "Best Production Cruiser 37-39 ft 2006" and the HR 62 won "Import Boat of the Year 2006". The results will be presented in the January 2006 issue of Cruising World magazine from the USA. The magazine writes:
"In a crowded field of 20 boats, Hallberg-Rassy had two nominees for Import Boat of the Year, but the Hallberg-Rassy 62 stood out among its peers the judges said: "They told us the purpose was push-button sailing and bluewater cruising, where you can do everything from the helm," said Giesemann. "They proved their point today. I was amazed. I'd need more time to get used to it, but it was so easy and comfortable to sail."
The award had 42 entrants and 26 nominees. In order to be judged in this award, the boats had to be carefully test sailed and checked during four days of dockside inspections and four days of sea trials.
Both the HR 37 and the HR 62 had US premiere at the Annapolis Boat Show in October 2005.Hallberg-Rassy is proud to receive another two awards.

Hallberg-Rassy 62 class winner in Caribbean 1500 Rally
The American Hallberg-Rassy 62 "Between the Sheets" has captured the first place in the Class II division for the Caribbean 1500 Rally. Owners Tom and Diane says: "With just our trusty cutter sail and a furled main, SHEETS was in her element. She was clearly the best boat in the fleet for these conditions. While others employed storm tactics and reduced speed, we only sailed faster. We sailed over 200 miles through the water and SOG for four straight days, including one as high as 236. No other boat managed a 200-mile day that last three days."
Another Hallberg-Rassy also performed well: the American HR 37 "Kikuyu" got the second place in class IV.
Congratulations to to both crews for great achievements!

Sailing club buys ten Hallberg-Rassy 342
A private European sailing club, British Kiel Yacht Club, has carefully investigated the market for 31-35 ft cruising boats. The result is an order of nine Hallberg-Rassy 342s.
The club has made a very detailed analysis of several competing boats including sea trials, inspection of building methods, analysis for possible second hand value, after sales support, spare parts supply and more. The analysis has been going on for one year. The club has recently tested the HR 342. The club committee is very enthusiastic about the new HR 342.
BKYC uses their yachts very extensively and sail each boat 7 000 nautical miles a year, which roughly corresponds to seven years of normal family use.
The order was later extended from nine to ten yachts. The boats are to be delivered in March 2007.
To read more about BKYC, please follow this link.
Each year Hallberg-Rassy makes several improvements on the boats. These are not changes just for the sake of it, but are a number of small improvements in detail, which are based on increased know-how in the yard and also on feedback from our 8 400 HR owners around the world. For 2006 the Hallberg-Rassy 31 will get unusually many improvements. This results in a Mk II edition that will have world premiere at the Düsseldorf Boat Show 21-29 January 2006. The improvements are:
New toe rail in aluminium/teak without holes.
The rig upgraded to a two-spreader rig with a more slender mast profile.
New engine: Volvo Penta D1-20, with lower revolution and higher torque
A significantly more powerful alternator, 115 A compared to 60 A earlier
More rounded design of the interior, with rounded and profile milled edges with ventilation grids above, like on the new HR 342.
Wash basin and counter top in the head of the composite/stone material Corian.
A separate ventilated wet locker, like the design of the new HR 342.
Companionway sliding hatch in smoke coloured plexi glass with handlebar in teak, giving more light in the entrance area.
The drawers now slide on ball bearings, which also have a built-in end-stop.
In order to obtain a smoother operation of the cupboard doors in the interior we now introduce transparent rubber stoppers.
The deck fittings for fresh water and fuel filling are upgraded to stainless steel and there is no longer any need for a winch handle when opening or closing. That also eliminates the risk for over tensioning and consequently damage of the o ring.
The bracket for 3 kilo gas bottles (if such are ordered) will now be fitted in such a way that the risk of the bottle standing in water is decreased.
Capacity of hot water calorifier (if ordered) has been increased from 22 litres to 24 litres.
Hallberg-Rassy most popular choice in Blue Water Rally
At the Blue Water Rally around the world, Hallberg-Rassys are the most popular choice. 28 % of the boats, or 8 out of 29, are Hallberg-Rassys. One of the participants is Christoph Rassy, who sails his HR 62 Bamsen. To read more about Blue Water Rally, please follow this link.

Dutch Hallberg-Rassy Regatta 17-19 June 2005
The Hallberg-Rassy Regatta is a big event in the Netherlands. Every year it is organised by the Dutch Hallberg-Rassy dealer, Nova Yachting International BV, since 2002 and there are always more than 40 Hallberg-Rassy yachts competing. The funds raised by the different crews and sponsors go to a organisation that organises sailing holidays for disabled people. So it's a great combination of fun, sailing and charity.
The Hallberg-Rassy Regatta takes place in the south of Holland close to the headquarters of Nova Yachting International BV. A little historical town called Zierikzee (Cityrights since 1248) with a beautiful marina is the homeport for this event and the races are sailed on the tidal waters of the Oosterschelde. This wonderful area is known for its mussels and lobsters and in the summertime you will find many birds and seals "sunbathing" on the sandbanks.
On the Friday the crews meet in a local pub (less than 100 feet from their boats) for a drink and a chat. The organization provides them with the necessary paperwork and during the evening the different strategies are discussed. Then on the Saturday the real work starts. After a cup of coffee, the last weather forecast and the final instructions all the boats sail out.
The course is depending of the tide and wind conditions between 16 and 28 NM long, and after a splendid day on the water the first boats normally finish around 15.30.
During the evening more than 200 people join the "Hallberg-Rassy Regatta" dinner with the prize giving and speeches.
The first edition in 2002 was won by a HR 43 No 22 "Moods". Although the conditions were light, edition 2003 was won by three big boats. Number 1 was HR 40 No 5. Closely followed by HR 53 No 72 "Lady of the Dawn" and HR 42 No 114 "La Gavina". The separate class of HR 34s, because there were 10 HR 34s on the water, was won by a team of mechanics working for the local yachtservice "van Swaay". They borrowed a boat from Nova Yachting International BV and with some technicians onboard who had never sailed before they displayed an outstanding performance. Especially because the competition under the HR 34 owners in the Netherlands is always very close and they are all fantastic yachtsmen. In 2004 the HR 53 No 52 "Daphne" won the Hallberg-Rassy Regatta with HR 53 No 72 "Lady of the Dawn" following closely. Number 3 became HR 37 No 23 "L' Amour Toujours".
That Saturday night more than 250 Hallberg-Rassy sailors watched, on a big screen on the street at the local pub close to their boats, the Dutch national football team win from the Swedish national football team during the 1/4 final of the European Championships. And the good thing was, even if the Dutch would have lost, the Hallberg-Rassy owners would have had a good night anyway, because they all have a weak spot for the country of birth of their so beloved yacht.
This year the Hallberg-Rassy Regatta 2005 will be sailed from 17th till the 19th of June. For more details and application, please follow this link.

37 yachts in Hallberg-Rassy Fun Regatta
(für deutsche Version, bitte hier klicken)
Record number of participating boats
Between the 19th and the 21st of August 2004 the fourth Hallberg-Rassy regatta took place in the Southern Baltic. 37 HR boats had come for the competition, which is a new record. The sailors had to deal with very variable winds ranging from very light up to Force 8.Other skills than just sailing expertise important...
The overall ambition for this year’s regatta was even more than previous years to have a generally good time together and to arrange a nice forum for HR owners to meet. During the regatta days, the sailing skills are not the only important factors. It is equally important to be connoisseur of wine as of wind (!) and also to be able to correctly judge other crew’s abilities in winch grinding. An important part of the overall competition was to guess the correct type of wine in a wine test. There was also an original America’s Cup training grinder, where you could simulate winching up the main sail of an America’s Cup yacht. After that every crew had to estimate the time it took for two athletic 15-year-olds to complete the same task. The closer they got, the fewer penalties they would get. Ergo, a good guesser could win the competition despite not-so-excellent sailing results! Everybody went back home with a prize. Both new constructions and old timers did well
The regatta had four classes, one class for yachts up to 38 foot and one for larger ones; with or without spinnaker/gennaker. And also a total prize where the results from wine testing and grinding were included. A handicap system was used so that both older and newer yachts would have the possibility for a good position. Many believed that the new HR 37 had too “fast” a handicap, which the boat would not have the capacity to sail up to – but it turned out to perform extremely well. The class up to 38 foot with spinnaker was won by a Swedish HR 37, skippered by Claes Österlind. The class up to 38 foot without spinnaker was won by the 25 year old HR 38, Paul Schmidt. The class 39 foot upwards with spinnaker was won by HR 53 Ikarus, and the class 39 foot up without spinnaker by HR 39 Gitti. Winner over all, with wine testing and grinding included, was the 15 year old HR 42, sailed by Dr. H Gatermann from Germany, who turned out to be a good sailor as well as a good guesser and an authority on wines! The regatta was sailed in Neustadt near Lübeck at the Baltic Sea. Starting point is Ancora Marina, a fullserviceharbour, were the German HR sales office is situated. Hallberg-Rassy regattas are getting more and more popular and already takes place in Germany, Holland, the UK, Italy, East coast USA and on the US West coast.

Hallberg-Rassy 37 class winner in Skagerrak Two Star
The Norwegian HR 37 ”Satchmo” won the Skagerrak Two Star Regatta in her class. The rules only allow two persons on board during the race. Thanks to a very comfortable boat, the crew was more rested than others and could perform better. The race started in Hankö, Norway and there was a 3 hours pit stop in Arendal and Marstrand in Sweden between the legs. Winds varied several times up and down from zero up to 36 knots. The total distance was 300 nautical miles and the races lasted 51 hours 33 minutes and 20 seconds for the winning HR 37. That gives an average speed of 5.8 knots, but you have to have in mind that the last 15 nautical miles took 12 hours to sail. Congratulations to the crew Ole Petter Pollen and Magnus Lundgren for a good performance!
In service for Hallberg-Rassy 1954 to 2004
Mats Olsson started in the company in 1954 at the age of 15. Today this would be called child labour, but at that time this was normal. Mats went directly from school to Hallberg’s Yard which is what the yard was called at that time. Now, in 2004, Mats has retired after 50 years of service in the same company. The roller Mats used for the last 26 years has been framed as a gimmick. The roller still doesn’t seem to be more than half a year old. You may see the framed roller at the Hallberg-Rassy reception.
New engine in the HR 37 and HR 40
After thorough tests, there will be a change of engine in the HR 37 and HR 40. The new choice is the Yanmar 4JH4E.
Both engines have many similarities: 4 cylinders and a volume of 2.2 litres, similar power, service side to starboard and a high torque at low revs.
The Yanmar engine runs very quietly and with little vibration. The Yanmar 4JH4E engine has improved performance:
Increased torque, 159 Nm at 1800 RPM, compared to 135 Nm at 2200 RPM with the old engine choice. A good torque range is especially important on a sailboat, as you in reality don’t use the horsepower but the torque. The fact that the maximum torque comes at so low revs is of great benefit particularly when manoeuvring in harbour. The combination of Yanmar’s own transmission, with a cone instead of a disc clutch provides a quieter operation.
It is also possible to upgrade the engine’s charging circuit with an extra 12V, 140A alternator. In this case the normal standard 12V, 60A alternator is still in place, isolated to charging the engine start battery. Also included in this upgrade package is an ”emergency switch”. This provides two functions: (1) You may use the service batteries to start the engine in an emergency. (2) In the event that the extra alternator fails, both the service batteries and the start battery can be charged via the smaller alternator. The extra alternator is also equipped with an external regulator with an optimized charging curve – this allows optimal battery charging without the risk of over charging. The regulator may also be re-programmed enabling it to charge various different battery types.
If your boat has been ordered with additional batteries we strongly recommend you to upgrade with the extra 140A alternator.
Hallberg-Rassy No 100 under construction
It is less than three years ago that the Hallberg-Rassy 43 was presented and hull number 100 is already under construction. A considerable achievement for a yacht of this size. The photo shows the team involved in building the HR 43.

First Mediterranean Hallberg-Rassy Regatta held
There are already Hallberg-Rassy Regattas in Germany, the UK, Holland, on the US West Coast and on the US East Coast. The first Mediterranean Hallberg-Rassy Regatta was held on 12-16 May 2004. It was organised by Hallberg-Rassy’s Italian dealer Lions InT-Yachts and it started in Punta Ala, Tuscana, Italy near the island Elba.
It was a Hallberg-Rassy meeting and regatta with the aim of having more fun than competition, a great event that is scheduled to be repeated in the future. A series of regattas were sailed. The first race was sailed from Punta Ala to the picturesque little village Marciana on the island Elba. Next day the regatta sailed to Marina di Salivoli in very light airs. The third day there was a race course back to Punta Ala, where two islands had to be rounded. The fourth and last race was sailed just outside Punta Ala. Every evening there was a feast where the good Italian food and the famous red wine of Tuscany flowed in plentiful quantities.
18 Hallberg-Rassy yachts participated. The overall winner was the Hallberg-Rassy 43 ”Drake” owned by Mr Grandi from Italy.
Eight million saw Hallberg-Rassy on German TV
Sunday February 8th 2004 at 2015 on the popular German TV channel ZDF, the film ”Begegnung am Meer” (Coincident meeting at the ocean) was broadcast. The film is a soap, taking place on the Swedish West Coast, recorded in the fall of 2003 with German actors. Many of the scenes were filmed at the Hallberg-Rassy yard and onboard Hallberg-Rassy yachts. Several well-known German actors participated and also a few people from the Hallberg-Rassy yard. Mr and Mrs Rassy had minor roles. The film lasted 1 h 30 and was uninterrupted by commercials. Eight million viewers saw the film, which showed a lot of the beautiful scenery the Swedish West Coast has to offer.
Hallberg-Rassy wins yet another award
At the world’s largest boat show, boot Düsseldorf, in January 2004, Hallberg-Rassy won yet another award, the “trophy boot-Düsseldorf”. This one is the 9th award in just 24 months. Hallberg-Rassy received the prize due to “Significant achieving within production cruising yachts”. The trophy is a glass sculpture by the artist Dejan Saric.
40 years with GRP hulls at Hallberg-Rassy
It is now 40 years since the first GRP hull was laminated at what today is called Hallberg-Rassy. The yard was at that time called "AB Harry Hallbergs Varvsindustri". In 1963 the first P 28 with a GRP hull was laminated. The P 28 was the bestseller at that time. Because many buyers were suspicious of GRP hulls, both GRP and wooden hulls were built side by side for several years. The customer could choose. The superstructure, however, was always high gloss varnished mahogany.
HR 53 wins Bermuda Cup
Solstice, Hallberg-Rassy 53, number 59, owned by RogueWave Yacht Sales - Bernie Jakits and Kate Christensen of Annapolis, Maryland, USA just won the 2003 West Marine Bermuda Cup!. With a very fast time of 3 days, 13 hours, and 30 minutes for the 650 mile run from Norfolk, Virginia to St. Georges Harbor, Bermuda, she took First to Finish, Line Honors, and Class 1 winner's trophies.
On the beat to the finish past North East Breakers and Kitchen Shoals in the last 30 miles, Solstice was able to carry more sail and point higher than the fleet of very respectable competition. Her helm balanced with ease in 20-25 knot SW winds with large surfing seas that moved us all quickly toward Bermuda. She maintained 9 to 10 knots for over 26 hours on a close reach, and showed her clean transom to the rest of the fleet.
Bernie and Kate says: "While we have owned numerous high-quality sailing vessels for 30 years, none were finer than our HR 53. We lived comfortably under sail and at anchor, never once doubting her abilities. All systems aboard worked perfectly. Oh, with one exception; the anchor light bulb burned out.
Once over the finish line, we happily entertained 36 sailors of the remaining fleet of 11 yachts that were entered in the Rally, very comfortably aboard Solstice while swaying at anchor in front of the St. Georges Dinghy and Sports Club. Everyone who came aboard Solstice was in awe of her beauty, strength, and craftsmanship. For us, there is no finer or even comparable sailing yacht under 60 feet available on today's market. We are very happy and proud to own Solstice HR53 #59 and are preparing her for her next adventure."
117 ft fishing trawler aground outsite Hallberg-Rassy in snow caos
An early morning in a snow caos in the end of January 2004 a Danish 117 ft fishing trawler went aground just 100m/300 ft outside the Hallberg-Rassy harbour . The fishing boat was confused in the bad visibility and tried to enter the wrong harbour. The harbour meant to head for is located just around the corner and there is a factory for taking care of fish. The trawler “Kamito” of Skagen, Denmark, was loaded with 120 tons of hering caught the night before. There is no underwater rock where the fisher went aground, but the water depth is 5 metres and the draught of the fishing vessel 6 metres. It was not damaged but hat to be towed away by two strong rescue ships.

Hallberg-Rassy voted
Boat of the Year - again
![]()
Hallberg-Rassy voted Boat of the Year for the third time in yearOnly less than two weeks ago, Hallberg-Rassy won the Sailboat of the Show award in Stockholm. For the third time in less than a year, a Hallberg-Rassy now wins another Boat of the Year award. The Hallberg-Rassy 43 just won not only the American Best Midsize Cruiser but was also elected Overall Cruising Boat of the Year in American Cruising World Magazine.
The Boat of the Year jury consists of professional yachting journalists who have sailed the 30 nominee boats for ten days. The Jury says:
“The German Frers-designed Hallberg-Rassy 43 was the one boat out of this year's fleet of 30 that most effectively brought together all the complementary features that make a seaworthy, ergonomic cruising boat. From gasketed deck lockers that drain to underwater lines that make her "track like a locomotive,” the Hallberg-Rassy brought it all together. She's a Divinycell-cored boat, and BOTY judge Ralph Naranjo was impressed with her alacrity under sail compared to older H-R's that he's sailed. "Her performance was that of a Frers pedigree," he said. "On the Hallberg-Rassy, everything seemed so logical to me: where things were placed, where my movement would go," said BOTY judge Carol Hasse. "If I were going to take a boat anywhere around the world, and I mean anywhere, for me it would be the Hallberg-Rassy."In January the HR 43 also won the German Yacht of the Year award, chosen by the readers of Europe’s larges sailing magazine, Yacht.
Early November the HR 40 won the Sailboat of the Show award at Scandinavia’s largest indoor boat show. This prize was chosen by a jury consisting of professional yachting journalists.
The sailors at Hallberg-Rassy are joking about extending the office with another wall, to create space for all the framed awards.
Hallberg-Rassy 43 vann just amerikanska kategorin Best Midsize Cruiser. Men inte nog med det, man vann också åtråvärda Overall Cruising Boat of the Year i amerikanska tidningen Cruising World.
Priset Overall Cruising Boat of the Year utses av en jury bestående av professionella båttidningsjournalister, som ingående seglat alla 30 kandidater under 10 dagar. Juryn motivering lyder:
I november vann även nya Hallberg-Rassy 40 Sailboat of the Show I Stockholm.
Stockholm.

Sailboat of the Show
Hallberg-Rassy 40 voted Sailboat of the Show
At Scandinavia’s largest in-door boat show, Scandinavian Boat show in Stockholm, Sweden, the new Hallberg-Rassy 40 was voted Sailboat of the Show. The prizewinner is chosen by several yachting journalists. The jury says:
“The Hallberg-Rassy 40 is a long distance cruiser of highest quality from the Swedish island Orust. The boat is the result of the yard’s long experience in boat building. This has in the Hallberg-Rassy 40 been further developed to a discrete elegance. Without looking at trends, this is a modern yacht built to highest standards in respect of equipment and comfort.”
We at Hallberg-Rassy are happy for another award winning new HR yacht.
Hallberg-Rassy 40 vald till Sailboat of the Show
På Skandinaviens största inomhusbåtmässa valdes nya Hallberg-Rassy 40 till Sailboat of the Show.

HR 43 wins Yacht of the Year award
The new Hallberg-Rassy 43 has recently won the prestigious Yacht of the Year award in the biggest category in the respected German magazine Yacht. Readers were asked to choose their favorite yacht for the title and the HR 43 received most votes.
This is the third time a Hallberg-Rassy has won. Ever since the award was introduced in 1996 every new Hallberg-Rassy model has won. First the HR 46, then the HR 62 and now the HR 43.
HR 43
TOP 10 Winner 2003
The Hallberg-Rassy 43 is top 10 winner 2003 in American Sail magazine. The prize, a beautiful crystal sculpture, was handed over at the Atlantic Sail Expo in Atlantic City, USA, and is followed by a feature in the February 2003 issue of Sail.
In eight full days of testing, Sail's judges test-sailed, critiqued, analyzed, and debated the pros and cons of 37 new boats. Here’s what they found-and what you need to know about the winner:
"The Hallberg-Rassy 43, designed by Germán Frers, is a comfortable offshore cruiser from a well-respected Swedish builder. Hull and deck construction meet the high standards we have come to expect from Hallberg-Rassy, as does the excellent mahogany joinery down below. The interior accommodation includes many features we like to find on long-distance cruising boats: a well-positioned wet locker, lots of solid handholds, lots of general stowage space (though it is somewhat limited in the galley), and generous fuel and water capacity. We liked the commodious staterooms fore and aft and were agog at the large heads. The forward head has room for an optional washer/dryer installation; this seems the most logical place for such equipment. We found the systems to be above average and were particularly impressed by the DC high-current panel and clean AC installation. There were some anomalies, such as untinned wire and less-than-optimal battery clamps and cables, that are commonly found on European boats.
We were unable to press the boat in the light conditions on Narragansett Bay, but we have no reason to believe this Hallberg-Rassy will not be up to more rigorous conditions. Buyers can safely expect to do some very serious sailing in a vessel of this ilk, and our judges agreed that, at the relatively modest asking price, the 43 is a lot of bluewater boat for the money."

This story is also available in:
Eight thousand Hallberg-Rassys have now been delivered. Summer 2002 the happy customer, Mr Hideaki Ogawa from Tokyo, Japan, with family, happened to be the boat owner to receive his HR 36 No 561 as Hallberg-Rassy celebrated another record breaking number of boats delivered
Long planned dream
The delivery was the start of a 10 year long journey around the world for Mr Ogawa who has only brief experience of sailing boats of this size. His experience comes mostly from light catamarans which he has sailed for a few years. The trip has been planned for a long time. The boat was originally ordered November 2000 through HR's Japanese dealer, Global Marine Inc.
Mr Ogawa is retired after having been employed by the well known computer company IBM.HR recommended by a friend
When asked how he came to know of Hallberg-Rassy he says he was told by a sailor friend that the HR would be the right boat for his trip around the world. He thereafter saw the boat at a boat show in Japan, read about it in Kazi, the well known Japanese sailing magazine, and also saw the boat at the London Boat Show before ordering it. He feels that Swedish products in general have an "air of quality and safety" around them and Hallberg-Rassy in specific. Before deciding, he compared the HR with many similar size boats but found the HR perfect for his purpose.
Plans for long distance cruising
On delivery day the whole family was represented but on the first part of the journey only Mr Ogawa and his wife Misako and their son, Hideyuki, will be on board. Their daughter Ayako will go back home to start a new job. The plan is to go through Göta canal to Stockholm and from there to go slowly down to Jersey to over winter the boat. In the wintertime the crew will return to Japan to be ready to cruise Mediterranean waters the summer of 2003. Another winter brake will take place when back in Gibraltar. The year after, the Atlantic will be crossed in order to get to the Caribbean islands for the summer. After two years there the journey will continue on to the Indian Ocean where the Ogawa's will stay for three years. Thereafter the plan is not continued, but Mr Ogawa has his mind set to continue the cruise for another three years.
We wish them all luck on their around the world trip!Double victory for HR 34 in HR Cup 2002
The HR Cup 2002 has been successfully held. The winner in the category without spinnaker was Mr Schrader-Seefeldt with his HR 34 "Muguet". Second was Mr Persiehl with an HR 43.
In the class with spinnaker the HR 34 Mimmi AlBerta of Cleas Österlind was No 1 and Werner Held´s HR 312 Lütte Bries III took a second place.Hallberg-Rassy sailor
challenges in America’s Cup
In December 1994 his Hallberg-Rassy 53 “Russe Noir” won her class in the ARC over the Atlantic.
Today Peter Harrison is leading the British America’s Cup Challenge. With the GBR Challenge, Mr Harrison put Great Britain back into the America's Cup competition again after a 14 year absence. Having sold his business, Chernikeeff Networks, for 300 million GBP, he decided to invest a considerable amount of his time and personal finance to create GBR Challenge. The Nippon Challenge syndicate has been bought and the new America’s Cup Class boat GBR 70 has been launched. Another identical boat is being built. Peter has always made clear that the GBR Challenge is being set up with future campaigns in mind. For further details, please visit www.gbrchallenge.com
Hallberg-Rassy won her class
in the ARC - again
It seems to have become a habit: A Hallberg-Rassy wins her class in the ARC yet another time. It’s the 5th class victory for a Hallberg-Rassy in the ARC. Last time a Hallberg-Rassy was the fastest keelboat on corrected time overall, this time the Norwegian HR 39 ”Guadalquivir” won both line honours and class victory in group G. She sailed from the Canary Islands to St Lucia in the Caribbean in 16 days, 6 hours an 40 minutes, averaging almost 7 knots. The second fastest boat in the class, a Swan 43, arrived 10 hours later. ”Guadalquivir” is skippered by 25 year old Nicolai Nordstrand and the crew is Lars Olav Jahre, Kjetil Gill Östvold and Jörgen Stöm-Gundersen. All are 25 years old and from Norway.
A fast and reliable yacht resulted in victory. ARC stands for Atlantic Rally for Cruisers and is the world’s biggest transoceanic event. 225 yachts from 25 nations participate. Out of these 16 are Hallberg-Rassys and the most prolific individual boat type in the rally is the Hallberg-Rassy 42 with 5 boats this year. ARC is sailed annually and the trip is 2700 nautical miles and normally takes 12 to 24 days. Hallberg-Rassy also sent a special support team to the ARC start at Gran Canaria. The support includes a check and adjustments of the rig and other important systems. Spare parts have also been arranged freight free if ordered in time. This service is free for Hallberg-Rassy sailors in the ARC.
ARC steht für „Atlantic Rally for Cruisers“.
4th HR rendezvous regatta in Seattle
The 4th West Coast Yachts Hallberg-Rassy Rendezvous held in Seattle, USA, April
6th and 7th on Elliott Bay. Eleven Hallberg-Rassys participated in a rally around the bouys on Saturday afternoon. It was a perfect day for sailing with a fresh spring breeze blowing 25 knots and gusting up to 30 knots. The first mark had solid poles, so one needed to be careful not going too close and at the same time not loosing boatlengths going too far away. Downwind the boats met a container freight ship.
After the race, there was a dinner and slide show presentation. John Neal, and Amanda Swan presented a program with slides from Sweden to the Canary Islands. Todd Rickart then presented his slide show of the ARC race from the Canary islands to the Caribbean, then Mike and Janice Moore presented a very informative slide show on their trip to the Caribbean, as well as a lot of great tips on do's and don'ts for cruising.
Sunday morning everyone gathered for a brunch, then sailed home.
Final results of the race were:First Place: Eric Lockard Hallberg-Rassy 53
Second Place: Robert Briggs Hallberg-Rassy 46
Third Place: Ed Bulgis Hallberg-Rassy 42
Please note, that Brad Baker took a third racing the HR 34. However, the owner was not on board, so third place prize was given to Ed Bulgis.
